I visited a church because its website claimed the congregation was "welcoming." Yet, litter served as corner decorations. The Welcome Center hosted the lost and found. The missions area stockpiled office equipment discards and other worn-out collectibles. Granted, I was greeted at the door as most churches do. But this church’s overly lived-in appearance made me feel less than welcome and totally uninvited.
Maybe it’s my tidy nature, but when I invite people to my house I at least pick up and try to anticipate what makes my guests feel most welcome. If a church claims to be welcoming, you should expect them to be prepared for God’s invited guest (you). If they show signs that make you feel like someone who’s dropped in unannounced, consider it your invitation to leave.
Yeah, it’s okay to leave a place early that hasn’t prepared for your visit. Chances are they will never know you didn’t stay.
