Prep Steps for Easter

by Reba Collins

Ever wonder what Palm Sunday means to Christians all over the world? Can’t figure out the significance of all the Holy Week events and how they relate to the Resurrection of Christ?

This coming Sunday, April 13, is Palm Sunday, which starts Holy Week. Leading up to Easter Sunday, it is one of the most momentous times for our faith. It also is one of the most ritualistic. And, ironically, the same Holy Week rituals that are supposed to draw us closer to God often drive us away simply because we don’t understand them.

Good churches do a good job of explaining the faith rituals and experiences of Easter. They serve as guides throughout that week and walk with you on this journey toward Resurrection Sunday – Easter.
But not all churches know you’re unsure or confused. Many just take it for granted that you get it.

So when you’re still not sensing the purpose or meaning behind Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Passover, or Good Friday, here are some resources to help you prepare and find more meaning in your walk with Christ during Easter:

  • Chuck Knows Church. Chuck Knows Church offers several short and entertaining videos (five minutes tops!) that unravel a variety of churchy subjects. Check out Chuck’s Easter videos on Palm Sunday, Passover, Shrove Tuesday, Easter Lilies and Candles, and Resurrection.  http://www.chuckknowschurch.com/
  • Busted Halo. Many Protestant rituals stem from our Catholic roots. The folks at Busted Halo do a great job explaining those rituals and traditions in a simple, straightforward way. http://bustedhalo.com/questionbox
  • About.com Christianity. This site offers quick explanations and more in-depth links on the Easter celebration. It’s a great site to satisfy your curiosity at any level. http://christianity.about.com/od/easter/u/easterup.htm#s1
Remember, no single church can take the time or give you everything you need to answer all your questions about Holy Week or Easter. It’s just too much to deliver quickly. So give them a pass on the details for now, and be encouraged when you find a church that will take the time later to get your questions answered. That’s a good church, and might be a good choice for you.
